OVERVIEW

The German manufacturer Mues-Tec wanted to expand its smart mirror technology, already used in hotels, to hair salons. I developed Magic Mirror, an interactive AR experience that lets salon clients try out hairstyles and colors in real time with personalized advice.

THE CHALLENGE

Clients often search online for inspiration but find it hard to picture how a hairstyle or color would suit them. Mues-Tec aimed to create an interactive application that lets clients visualize hairstyles and colors in real time before taking a seat in the salon chair.

My task was to design a functional app, define the user flows, develop a visual identity, and deliver a clickable prototype.

THE SOLUTION

The final concept, expands the traditional salon consultation with face-scan analysis and real-time AR visualization. The prototype includes:

  • Face Scan & Analysis: Detects face shape and skin tone, providing personalized style and color advice.

  • Real-Time AR Try-On: Allows clients to instantly test hairstyles and colors using face segmentation (developed in Effect House).

  • Editorial Screens: Interactive start screens draw attention and initiate the user flow.

  • Product Integration: Connects with salon products to inspire clients and encourage sales.

  • Client Retention: QR codes, email follow-ups, and social sharing enhance engagement, feedback, and loyalty.

  • Brand Identity & UI: A cohesive visual identity featuring logo, color palette, typography, and high-fidelity screens.

THE RESULT

Magic Mirror shows how technology can elevate the salon consultation experience. The project resulted in a clickable prototype, tested at the IT-Hub and during a focus session at Alfa College. A key design insight was that a dark background with light accents provides the best contrast in mirror environments.

User feedback was highly positive. The prototype scored high on attractiveness and ease of use.
